ANIMALS AND PETS AT TAN HILL INN
I tell you, this place gets more like a Zoo every day! So to introduce the Tan Hill family of pets.....'Tan' the Lamb! - Yes, that's right, a LAMB!! The latest addition to the Tan Hill family. Tan was born an April fool. The runt of a litter of three. Tan now lives in the bar and has been hand reared with substitute Ewes milk formula (every 4 hours!). He is a Lincoln and Swale Cross Mule. Come and meet Tan in the bar and even get a chance to feed him. He's very soft a cuddly at the moment. Catch him now before he gets big and ugly with tombstone teeth, bad breath and horns!
'Sherbet' the Dog - Fire Monitor! So named because of her dubious heritage! She's a wire haired Dachshund Jack Russell cross. By the way, that is HER seat next to the fire and she will get cross if you try to move her. You have been warned! Sherbet has been mothering Tan the Lamb and taking him for walks. Both however appear to more concerned with keeping their coveted places next to the fire.'Minty' the Cat - V.C.O (Vermin Control Operative). Minty is very elusive and also a very efficient killer! Proud of his work too, it's always nice to be presented with a half eaten mouse at the back door with Minty looking proud as punch!
The Ducks - Egg Production Unit. We have about 12 Ducks at the last count. They're free agents and come and go as they please. Usually coming when we feed them and going when they 'want to be alone'! We do have fresh free-range duck eggs for sale at the bar (subject to availability)
Toronto the Cat (toe-toe for short ) Named after the city of Toronto, Canada where Mike recently visited on (tunnelling) business. Apparently, the bed wasn't warm enough for Tracy with out Mike....even with one cat (already) 3 ducklings, a dog and a lamb to keep her company! He's a cute little grey tabby.
The Duckling - Future Egg Production Unit! This soggy looking chap is the only survivor from a recent batch of chicks!
'Gypsy', 'Betty' and 'Star' - from Swaledale Ponies are other regular visitors to Tan Hill Inn. Local Western riding school owner and character Martin 'Django' Kiss often frequents Tan Hill with his horses. Visit his website at www.swaledaleponies.com for information about a ride out to Tan Hill Inn including lunch and a drink and the bar.
ARKENGARTHDALE
Upper Swaledale & Arkengarthdale are highlights of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Here you will find Nature at its best. There are high mountains at the head of these valleys whose evocative names such as Blea Barf, Great Shunner Fell and Rogan's Seat echo the voices of the Vikings who settled here over 1,000 years ago.
Sparkling moorland streams cascade down the valley sides through pastures touched by a thousand shades of green. The River Swale, England's fastest flowing river, threads its way through a maze of fields dotted with stone barns.
Over generations the people of these Dales have shaped the landscape and left a legacy of history, folklore and legend. The language of the Vikings can still be heard all around in the local dialect and the village place-names.
SWALEDALE
The hills tell a tale of a lead mining industry that began with the Romans. There are ruined monastic buildings, ancient churches, packhorse bridges, attractive villages and old-fashioned country pubs. It is the people who live and work in the dales that add depth and character to these valleys. So, spend some time exploring Swaledale and Arkengarthdale to discover the true romance of these beautiful valleys. If you scratch deeper than the surface you will certainly find a truly wonderful place that lies at the heart of the "good things in life".
