WANTED - THE RETURN OF TED MOULT & THE EVEREST FEATHER
We eagerly require information leading to the safe return of our famous picture of the late Derbyshire Farmer presenter 'Ted Moult' beside the first Double glazed window installed by Everest at Tan Hill, Great Britain Highest Inn.

The picture which also contains the original feather from the Everest Adverts filmed in the early 1980's disappeared from the pub sometime in mid to late October. The picture is of great sentimental value and has been hanging in its place beside the window at Tan Hill Inn for almost 30 years. It was given to the pub by Ted Moult and Everest after the original airing and success of the Adverts in the early 1980's.

Many customers ask about Ted Moult and the feather used in the draught test on the adverts and are always pleased to see the picture beside the window where it was   filmed. Everest has replaced and updated the double glazing only once at Tan Hill since they were originally installed however the picture and the feather are   irreplaceable.

The picture and feather are Tan Hill's version of the Crown jewels and we are desperately saddened by its loss. If it is returned by any means we will not pursue the matter further.

Anyone who has any information about its whereabouts should contact Tan Hill Inn. Tel: 01833 628246. Email: info@tanhillinn.com

STARRING ON SKY - Tuesday 18th May 2010 at 10pm

….  You can see your Tan Hill hosts, Tracy and Mike, on "Home" which is Sky TV Channel 246 and Virgin 265.  This programme is one of the popular series hosted by Nick Knowles called "Nick Knowles' Original Features".

"Their new home is a Grade II listed farmhouse, with a walled garden, an old granary and the foundations of other previous phases visible. With the help of documents from the 19th century, and old photos and memories from the local community, Mike and Tracy are soon able to piece together the history of their home - in the early 20th century, the upstairs room was used as a local ballroom!"

TRACY ON PANORAMA... TALKING ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING!?!?!?!?!?!? - Monday 24th May

And then on Monday 24th May tune in to Panorama to find out what our lunatic landlady has to say about Global Warming!!!… Yes, Global Warming! She probably thought it was what Mike and her have to do to keep warm on those cold winter nights in the snow-covered Tan Hill Inn on the remote moors of the northern Yorkshire Dales! Tracy's response to me as to why Panorama had interviewed her was "why did they want to ask me about Global Warming… I'm a landlady not a scientist! I suppose we will have to tune in on Monday to find out how she thinks we should save the world… butt I wouldn/t ho;d your breath!

UPDATE ON THE RESTORATION OF BROADBAND AT THE TAN HILL INN - WEDNESDAY 6TH JANUARY 2010

Following ongoing discussions with BT, and their continued exploration of the possibilities opened up by new and developing technology options, we are pleased to be able to update that we have now commenced a 60 day field trial running Broadband over the non-standard solution already in place to provide telephony services to Tan Hill. Throughout the trial, we have committed to BT to undertake some service tests as part of their overall review of the performance of the service and to help determine its future viability.

Thanks to those of you who have supported Tan Hill over the past year. It is great that we are now working with BT as part of this trial and that they have delivered a working solution

THE WORLD'S MOST PUBLICISED PUB 'LOCK IN' AND LONGEST NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY OF ALL TIME AT THE TAN HILL INN - BRITAIN'S HIGHEST PUB - JANUARY 5TH 2010

Well... just as we think it impossible that Tracy and her Tan Hill Team can not hit the News again... it happens!!  Tracy and her famous Yorkshire Pub are world-famous because of what could be the longest New Year's Eve Party of all time!!!  The weather changed for the worse on New Year's Eve and party-goers were even transported over the snoe=covered North Yorkshire moors by Snow Cat.... but the deteriorating weather and blizzards led to 2 feet of snow outside the fromt door and 2 metre drifts!!  So the 30 trapped revellers 'partyed on' and virtually drank the pub dry in 3 days of fun and frolics!  They eventually escaped after 3 days on January 3rd.

As a result Television News helicopters have repeatedly circled the Inn and Tracy and the Party Goers have been on the news all around the world! As well as local regional and national radio and television and newspapers, Tracy has also been 'live' on Radio in Wellington in New Zealand, Radio Israel and Radio Beiijing!!  Emails of support and interest have come from as far away as Canada and Australia and there has even been an offer to buy this Tan Hill Inn.  The Inn's 4 website have also received a surge in traffic with around 50,000 visits a day since the news broke!

And then some idiot rang up trying to sell Tracy party lights and a snow machine!!!

LATEST NEWS ABOUT OUR BATTLE FOR RESTORATION OF BROADBAND AT TAN HILL INN - 19 DECEMBER 2009

We would like to thank Danny Longbottom, General Manager of Indirect Partner Sales at BT, for his efforts to find a resolution so we can restore broadband access at Tan Hill Inn.  He has been pleased to confirm that BT was now willing to enter into a technology field trial with Tan Hill. The trial is to provide a Broadband service using the 4RF technology that is in place currently to provide the previous telephony services.  The trial will be run for 60 calendar days, during the period of the trial BT will require Tan Hill to commit to undertake some service tests as part of their overall review of the performance of the service.

Tracy now reports that it is working and she is spreading the word as she is so excited about it!  The Cat 5 cable out of main box is at the moment plugged into her laptop…. but they will be getting an in-house router next week they hope…. when she is not snowed in!!!!  She has been snowed in at the Inn for about 2 days this week and will be again until as soon as Monday, if she is lucky (that's if the snow plough gets there without tipping over like today's one did on it's way up here). But Tracy would like to tell Danny at BT, " a big well done so far!"   and is now ready for testing the broadband system… so send her lots of emails as she will be lonely stuck up there among the snowdrifts!!!

REPLY FROM MIKE PEASE OF TAN HILL INN TO BILL MURPHY OF BT

Bill good morning

Thank you for your response, you will understand when I do not agree with you and we will continue to battle with you on this front.

I f ind it very difficult to understand that as we have demonstrated to you that Broadband over a microwave link is done in many ‘other’ places around the world, but it would appear that we are a third world country in this respect.

I do not believe it is ‘difficult’ to provide Broadband to Tan Hill, it just appears not to fit within one of your ‘tick box comfort zones’ What is galling is that this is the second similar experience in four years and it does not go down very well when BT effectively tells me rubbish, mistruths even just to ‘get rid of us’

To re-iterate- When we took over Tan Hill some 4 years ago we started by asking BT can we have broadband please, at every conversation we made the point that we have a ‘Microwave link’ it took 6 months on that occasion for BT to finally tell us ‘sorry’ we can not do it as your link is analogue, IT NEEDS TO BE DIGITAL, the technical reason I can understand, but your customer experience was absolutely dreadful to say the least! Again you tried to bill us for months!

As previously stated Mike Fox a long serving BT employee quite high up in the BT Satellite transmission business was so embarrassed on BT behalf that he arranged for us to have a satellite dish installed FOC, unfortunately this service which BT used to own but then sold onto RDS has proved to be only just workable due mainly to ‘someone’ overselling the service and we ended up with a contention ratio of 70/1 the service was always breaking down, but at least it mostly worked although very slow.

Also as stated elsewhere this service was cancelled in February due to the ‘Galat’ platform going out of service, following our bad experience we were extremely reluctant to fund the +/-£1200 to upgrade the dish with RDS, but we then realised that BT had UPGRADED OUR MICROWAVE LINK TO DIGITAL, given the original stated reason for BT inability to supply, prior to approaching BT we explored via our IT guy availability of Microwave Broadband across the world, Lo and Behold it was available all over the world in remote areas.

With some trepidation we re-engaged with BT, as you can see if you have read the history, have you done that? Then that is where the problems once more begin, dealing with the BT ‘customer experience’ have you ever been on the receiving end? Mike Fox, deceased God Bless him had, on a personal level, which is why he REALLY empathised with us, but he actually did something about it, not gave us platitudes!

So we begin, OUR IT guy made an appointment with an ‘Engineer’ to come and check us out, I took a day off work to meet him, he did not turn up, but we spoke on the phone, turned out he was not an Engineer as promised just a salesman, but we had telephone conversation and reiterated enumerable times that we have a microwave link, no wires, repeatedly they surveyed the line and advised us no problem.

We asked for an Engineer install as we expected problems, but we asked for an Engineer with Microwave experience! We may as well have talked to the wall! I believe that given the information we repeatedly gave your people that we were missold the service as they repeatedly told us they had done a line survey.

We have offered you a cheap and cheerful system where you could reverse feed us a WiFi signal, and agreed to purchase said equipment, but again this does not fit into BT’s ‘comfort zone, tick box’ mentality. You are not even prepared to try it.

You could of course offer once more to fund the Satellite dish, in your scheme of life that is not expensive and a cheap get out of jail card, given BT has offered me £500 compensation for a missed appointment when I took a day off work to meet your engineer who did not turn up it is not a lot extra!

Some of the words in the letters we receive from your selves are mind blowing when they talk about the reason for none supply as the line being ‘too long’ we probably have the shortest line in the country, some 50 metres at a guess out to the transmitter!!!!!

You will shortly be getting representation from the two local Mountain rescue services that frequently use Tan Hill as base and took advantage of our WiFi service to communicate.

We are a business and perhaps 50% or more of it comes via the internet.

Regards

Mike Peace
Tan Hill Inn

WE HAVE BEEN ASKED BY BT TO POST THIS LETTER THIS WE ARE HAPPY TO DO

From: samantha.cuthbert@bt.com [mailto:samantha.cuthbert@bt.com] On Behalf Of bill.murphy@bt.com
Sent: 05 June 2009 19:42

Subject: Tan Hill Inn - Broadband

Dear Mr Peace,

Please let me introduce myself, my name is Bill Murphy and I am BT's Managing Director responsible for all of BT's Small Business customers. BT's Chief Executive, Ian Livingston, has asked me to respond to you.

I am writing in order to further explain why we cannot provide broadband service to the Tan Hill Inn. I would also like to acknowledge that we made an error in sending you a bill for a service we could not provide and would again like to offer a sincere apology for this.

I have reinvestigated how we could provide broadband service to you, but have again reached the conclusion that we cannot do this at this time. We took an order from you some months ago, in good faith, subject to survey, in line with our standard policy. However, as our survey has shown that we are not able to provide service, the request has been cancelled without liability. This is in line with BT’s standard terms and conditions.

We empathise with you because the Tan Hill Inn is in a situation where it is extremely difficult to provide broadband service. We have looked in detail at possible alternative products from within the BT portfolio and the use of microwave radio. We have concluded that this would not be possible. In fact, we estimate that the only workable system for providing broadband to the Tan Hill Inn would cost at least £17,000 to install and incur extra ongoing charges of up to £5,000 annually, with an extra ongoing charge after the first three years.

We have investigated your suggestion of another solution for around £100 and we do not believe this to be a practical solution either. We do not like to refuse to provide service, but regrettably we don’t have a choice in this case.

We are currently looking at the feasibility of providing broadband satellite service for businesses in your situation. We will be in touch with you when we can tell you more. Though we expect this to be more towards the year end.

Once again, I am sorry that we cannot help you at this time.

Yours faithfully

Bill Murphy
Managing Director BT Business

FAREWELL TO OUR FRIEND NEIL STEPHENSON - WE WILL ALL MISS YOU!
It is with the deepest regret that we have to advise you of the death of Neil Stephenson. Our customers will remember his smiling face and helpful personality as he served them behind the Tan Hill Bar. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad and difficult time.

Below are reports from the Journal Newspaper and some tributes published;

The Journal - "The rider killed in a motorbike tragedy in Northumberland was a kind and gentle giant. Those are some of the tributes paid by friends and neighbours after Neil Alan Stephenson's shock death on Sunday night. The 50-year-old died in Wansbeck Hospital after he was thrown from his Kawasaki at the Woodhorn roundabout on the A189 near Ashington".

Some of the many tributes include;

"Shocking that you have gone, some funny times and memoryz. :) (Spoon Game) eye well, R.I.P. :/"

"Don't mean to go on, but can't get my head around this tragic accident. My thoughts are also with his girlfriend...... such a terrible waste of a life like the tributes say a kind and gentle giant. It is just so bloody unfair!"

Well this last weekend has been a busy one...On friday the 8th it was the  wedding of Angelina and Daniel,
we wish them all the best for the future. Then on saturday 9th we had Sarah and Nicks stag and hen do.....
and what a good do it was too....a 60's 70's 80's fancy dress party with a rocking disco hosted by DJ Rantin Richie.
Sunday the 10th we were invaded by the Masonic car club, The Vintage tractor Club and a vintage motorcycle club, they all
turned up at the same time....so it was just a tad hectic for a while.
Also on Sunday afternoon we had a group of coast to coast cyclists who stopped off for a bit of a sing along,
they were raising money for the Nancy Oldfield Trust....What a good bunch eh.... And we all hope that Neils shoulder gets better
 soon ....ahhh bless.
Last month we raised £810.90 for the KIrkby Steven Mountain Rescue...
We collect for a different Charity every month. This month we hope to raise £1500 for Swaledale fell rescue. Maybe you guys know of a worthy charity
we can add to our list....contact...Angie or tracy at tanhillinn.com
I came up with stealing the idea of making a bit of money for charity in the form of the Tan hill version of The Calender Girls calender, so Tracy and the rest of the staff have agreed to get their kits off, BUT, only if I raise £3.000 in the month of September.   So I need you all to dig deep in September. All proceeds from the sale of the calender will go to charity.
Well thats it for now....Angie..

friday 1st May.
Well as bank holiday looms, everyone is busy. I went out to feed the lambs was promptly joined
by all the chooks and ducks and was very suprised to see some new additions to the tan hill zoo
in the form of ducklings.....to give them a fair chance of survival we had to catch them though...
mmn...so after an almost wild goose/duck chase and the help of ellie josh and maria we finally managed
to capture them. alas the fun did not end there....our two pet lambs, donner and shiesh were in big trouble..
our cooler system for the soft drinks machine had packed in working last nght, and as i type we are waiting
for the engineer to come and fix it.   Our little detective Ellie discovered that the cable from the outside
cooler has been chewed right through. its a wonder donner and shiesh did not turn into kebabs...

THE END OF WIFI AT TAN HILL INN - WE NOW HAVE TO BATTLE BT

With the government targeting of 'Broadband For All' it seems ridiculous that BT should see fit to penalise remote rural communities by refusing to continue the wifi broadband service at the Tan Hill Inn. The current service ceases on March 31st 2009 and BT have so far refused to co-operate in the continuation of this essential service! Detailed news will follow soon.... keep visiting... and please email us your support...

Thursday March 5th 2009 - EWE WOULDN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!  "Quick" someone shouted as we were in the middle of the lunchtime rush, "Tracy needs a load of stuff getting out the car". Lots of bodies rush outside to grab sight of the old bat in full flow, and grinning like a cheshire cat. Next thing you know there's the sound of bleating, and in stroll the two latest additions to the Tan Hill Clan (Well its about time we had some arrivals after the recent departures of both animals and humans).. Yep, Lo and behold, we have two brand new little Ewe's, bloody noisy beggars though, methinks. Dr Doolittle should definately try and get a job here, there must be a position for an animal physician. Rumour has it that one of the local craftsmen is making an ark , not only for the animals but to shove her ladyship in as well. Join us again pretty soon for more mad adventures from Tan Hill.......

Tuesday February 3rd 2009 - POLICE AND FELL RESCUE SAVE HER DAY!!! - MRS DALEY'S DAILY DISASTER!!
Well, for those who know our crazy landlady, this will not come as a surprise! Since she isn't here to write this diary entry herself, then you will realise there is a reason....

The terrible cold spell and heavy snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.... with strong freezing cold winds meant blizzards and deep snowdrifts for Great Britain's highest and most remote Inn. In fact poor Tracy was cut off overnight on her own with only a few sheep, hens, ducks, cats and dogs to talk to! However, today, two staff managed to walk several miles in a short break in the weather to get through to her today. But Tracy, undaunted and decidedly more than a little crazy, set off in her snow cat with her two colleagues to reach civilisation. It was like an episode of 24!

Uploaded Image

However... as with all good lady drivers, she set off with an empty tank of diesel and only travelled a couple of miles before being stuck on top of the 2-metre high snowdrifts.... and in the middle of nowhere without heat and the necessary clothing!! With the last mobile phone battery power she raised the police who tried to get a rescue helicopter... but raised the Fell Rescue who reached the scene and led them to safety off the Pennine Moors after several hours in very dangerous conditions..... but she can't get home and her snow cat is stranded.... and partner Mike is not best pleased!!

"The weather outside is frightful,
And the fire so delightful,
But Tracy decided to go,
Out in the snow, in the snow, in the snow!
"

Uploaded Image

Once again the famous Tan Hill Inn and infamous landlady have been the centre of attention on television and radio news reports throughout the afternoon and evening.... at least she survives to bring us laughter and fun once the roads open again!!!! And spare a thought for her two fellow inmates, Ellie and 'Rantin Richie'.... well he wasn't Rantin when he set off!!!!

17/21st September 2008 THE HIGHEST PUBS IN THE UK TOUR

It has been done before but at the speed of a gazelle. This time we wanted to take our time and enjoy the places we were visiting.

This event travelled to Wales, Eire, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England, finishing at Tan Hill. Mike and Billy were joined by Clive, Frank and Richard for this first leg of the club's European tour of the Highest Inns and Pubs. The challenge started this year with a round trip of the British Isle's highest Inn's over four days in September.

We arrived back outside the Tan Hill Inn after 768 miles, 4 Countries, 7 Pubs, 3 1/2 days and 5 dirty bikes. This of course is what it was all about.

Good friends, on bikes with amazing open country roads and stunning scenery.

Look out in the MCN for a article on the tour and information about future events with the 1732 Club at Tan Hill Inn.

The tour ended at Tan Hill on Saturday 23rd September when we also hosted a Motorbike Meet with BBQ and live music in the bar in the evening.

15/17th August 2008 THE INAUGURAL TAN HILL BIKE RALLY
We are looking at a 3-4 day event. Music in the form of a disco, and a live band. Food and drink and hopefully a barbeque in the evenings, just in case the weather decides to join in too. Plenty of games and competitions for all. With different categories for the competitions to give all the bike and there riders a chance of winning a prize.

2008 BREAKING NEWS - PHOTO SCOOP BELOW!!!!
Mike decided to take Tracy on a romantic holiday across the globe in Bali, Borneo and environs as they had not had a real break together since taking over the Tan Hill Inn. What a loving chap Mike is!!!!! Aaaaargh! However, shock, amazement, horror..... he didn't know what was around the corner.... Tracy got fixed up with a long-haired redhead from Borneo!! Maybe its best summed up in verse....... "If you go down to the woods today, You're sure of a big surprise, "If you go down to the woods today, You'll never believe your eyes, Cos Tracy did freeze, Indeed she shook at her knees, When a bloody great Orangutan jumped out of the trees, Ripped off her blouse and did h is best her to please!!!!!!"

Well I guess it takes all sorts... and most of them go to the Tan Hill Inn!!! But for the landlady who has a touch of Doctor Doolittle in her.... the girl who has hens, cats, ducks, dogs and sheep running around her country inn.... what was to come was even a surprise for her.... and poor romantic Mike felt like a gooseberry! This wild beast (not Mike) gently took hold of Tracy's hand and took her for a one mile walk through his forest... boy, does he know how to show a girl a good time! But there is a happy ending - Tracy and Mike have been re-united.... and Mike has a photo of this poor Oran Utan's 'Close Encounter of A Very Strange Kind' (with Tracy). Watch this space for this photo extravaganza. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!

Mike and Tracy do "scrub up well" don't they?

11th May 2007 KFC LAYS A GOLDEN EGG FOR TRACY - Kase Finally Concluded!
Cinderella can go to the ball.... her Christmas Dinner won't turn into a pumpkin!!!!.... so miracles do happen! Amidst all the media frenzy that has captivated the whole nation and beyond, there has been a happy ending. We are grateful to KFC for an eventual amicable resolution to this matter which has put us under great pressure over the last week - we were beginning to feel like the turkey in our Christmas Dinner! So we would like to say Thank You to KFC for their prompt decision yesterday to withdraw their claims. Furthermore we would like to thank all of you.... the countless thousands who protested to KFC and who sent us emails or telephoned us offering your kind support and even assistance. MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL.... we are feeling on top of the world at 'The Top of the World'. LUV TRACY XXX May 10th 2007

NEVER MIND LIONS AND DRAGONS... OFF SHE WENT INTO THE 'CHICKEN'S DEN'....Report 5pm
Not wishing to be hen-pecked by a giant multi-national, off went little Tracy into battle earlier this afternoon... to ruffle some feathers!!!! Wishing to taste the opposition she arrived at KFC at Middlesbrough with her Tan Hill T-shirt proudly worn!! Some girl our Tracy... but it helps if you are a little mad! Well she has made the 'Egglines' again! May 10th 2007.

TRACY RECEIVES CELEBRITY STATUS... .. 4.30pm

She may be be one of the great British eccentrics.... but she has a heart of gold which has been put under great stress this week!! In the space of three days, the conflict with KFC has taken over her life on the 'hill' at the top of the world. But she has never been in a 'fowl' mood despite the pressure placed upon her regarding what has been termed a 'storm in a bucket'. Tuesday saw her on the BBC News only hours after the KFC letter had been confirmed... and Wednesday has witnessed hundreds of supportive phonecalls and emails that have taken over her life.... plus numerous newspaper and radio interviews.... being on Radio 4 and Radio Five Live today!!!! Tonight she is reported to be interviewed by Chris Evans on Radio 2, whilst GMTV have apparently booked accommodation late tonight ready for production and broadcast on Friday morning! She even states that she has had two offers of free legal support from solicitors if the matter goes to court! Go Tracy GO!!!! May 9th 2007 TRADEMARK CONCERN.....WHAT DO YOU THINK... LET US KNOW Whatever the outcome of the 'Tracy and Goliath' conflict, one common thread in the supportive phonecalls is the question of how the Trademark Registry can allow the registration of common words from the English language that prevents their future usage!!! Indeed, an English professor emailed advising that 'family feast' is in the 1959 Oxford dictionary... so how can dictionary words and phrases be excluded from general use in Britain? What do you think .... drop us an email and let us know what you think.....

May 9th 2007 SHOCK.... HORROR.... - Tan Hill versus Kentucky Fried Chicken
We are ‘REQUESTED’ on behalf of KFC by ‘International’ Law Firm “Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer” www.freshfield.com to change the name of our ‘Christmas Day Family Feast’ as apparently K.F.C, that well known American based fast food chain has been able to register the words ‘FAMILY FEAST’. How does an American based company manage to 'Hijack' the English language in this way? It appears preposterous. What do we do? Roll over and change the words, easy to do no problem! Or stand our ground; we can not afford to fight the might of these guys of course. Tan Hill could disappear! (From Mike)

2006 - 2007 PLANS FOR WIND POWER TO COME TO TAN HILL - NO! NOT TRACY'S MOUTH
We have to go back to the early part of the last century to find a time when Tan Hill was not reliant on a Diesel Generator to provide it's energy needs. Prior to that, coal, gas and candle power were the only means of getting heat and light to the Inn. We are nearly 5 miles from the National Grid and therefore have to generate our own power to give us our heat, light and indeed lift the water from our own bore-hole and, most importantly supply power to the beer pumps! Technology has moved on and the emergence of wind power as a viable eco-friendly alternative power source would appear to be the answer to our power problem. We look forward to a time in the very near future when we shall be able to switch off our diesel thirsty and carbon emitting generator and switch over to wind power. Our planning consent has been passed and our final hurdle is to secure land rights to place the turbine in what would be an ideal location to optimise it's efficiency and generating capability. The Proven Energy WT1500 Wind Turbine Specifications: Rated Output: - 15000W (15kW) Voltages available: - 48V / 300V Annual Output - 15,000-30,000 kWh* Rotor Diameter: - 9m Hub Height: - 15m The most recent addition to the Proven Energy product range is the WT15000. This serious size turbine is ideal for light industrial, light commercial and agricultural use. With this sort of power you can easily power about 6 or 7 typical 3-bed houses in the UK (depending on your wind resource of course). For more information about our wind turbine e-mail mike@tanhillinn.com.

November 2005 OUR HAGGLUND BV206
The Hagglund BV206 is used by Army. Designed for use in snow, the amphibious BV206 is just as capable over soft ground or even desert sand. The vehicle consists of two powered, tracked cars. The joint between the cars permits steering by articulating the vehicle. BV206 will be arriving at Tan Hill in early 2006 complete with its new eye-catching Tan Hill Inn livery. Not only will we use it for promotional duties at local markets and events, with its ability to 'float' on top of snow it's sure to make Tan Hill more accessible over the winter months . The Hagglund 'Old Peculier' is Tan Hill's TUV.....'Tracked Utility Vehicle'. Tan Hill Inn's new Hägglund BV206 all-terrain tracked utility vehicles (TUV) makes the inaccessible accessible. We added the amphibious TUV to our fleet to provide a simple solution to all off-road transportation and winter snow and ice 'break through' transportation. The TUV can be driven on the roads too as it has flexible rubber bladed tracks. Although the only requirement is a full UK Driving Licence, advanced driving techniques are required to manoeuvre this articulated vehicle. Able to operate in extreme climate conditions, it offers us year-round access to remote locations, even coping with 100% (45°) inclines. This makes it ideal for use by a wide range of industries such as utilities (gas, water, electricity) provision, land and forestry management, construction, and coastal and mountain rescue and recovery, where the remoteness of a work site could cause delays. For us, it simply ensure that we can get a loaf of bread and get customers to and from Tan Hill in extreme winter conditions. In addition to their all-terrain capability, our TUV is fully amphibious (without any prior preparation) allowing us to cross water obstacles (such as rivers and streams), marshes and peat bogs. A low ground pressure of only 8 PSI (less than half of a person’s foot) makes them ideal for use in sensitive or fragile lowland or highland habitats. A narrow width, of less than 2m, also minimises disruption to the environment. The TUV seats up to six crew, including the driver, in the front unit. The rear unit can carry stock, livestock or up to 8-10 people comfortably. The 'Old Peculier' was photographed at the Theakston brewery in Masham and has recently been featured on BBC Look North, BBC National News and News 24 as well as The World Service and both local and national press. Originally designed for use by the Swedish Army, the BV206 consists of two tracked units linked together with a steering unit, each unit consisting of a chassis with a body mounted on four rubber elements. The front and rear units are connected by a unique hydraulic steering linkage, which gives great flexibility in all axles and extremely good manoeuvrability. Maximum road range is 330 km and load capacity is 2500 kg.

October 2005 BROADBAND ARRIVES AT TAN HILL INN
October 2005 saw the arrival of our brand new Vsat 360e satellite receiver dish. Due to our remote location we rely on a microwave system for telephone and fax. Technology does not allow the broadband signal to transmit over what is now an ageing analogue system so, our only option was to invest in a satellite based system. The connection is relayed using the Intelsat network of satellites and the BTOpenworld Satellite Service. We now have a state of the art Netgear Rangemaster MIMO wireless broadband access available and in time aim to provide a full wireless access service to residents and visitors alike. Our plans also include the provision of web-cam to display day-to-day life up the hill and provide streaming on-line pictures of future wedding services to guests unable to attend the special day in person. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people at Vsat for their professional installation. The service is now fully operational and we hope to roll out our programme of broadband access services over the next few months.
